Developers Crombie Real Estate Investment Trust and Westbank are now proposing three 40 storey “mega-towers” at Broadway and Commercial, charging expensive rents. Only 10% of the 981 suites will be based on average city rents – the rest will be as high as the market allows. The proposal is at odds with the community plan, which calls for a new “social heart” for the neighbourhood with a new civic plaza at a renewed Safeway site, with towers no more than 24 storeys high.
