Revised Safeway Megatower Plan a Failure
You may already have heard: the developers of the Safeway site at Broadway & Commercial have revised their proposal.
You can see their revised proposal here: https://shapeyourcity.ca/1780-e-broadway
We continue to see major problems with it. It does not meet the terms of the Grandview Woodland Community Plan.
The skyscrapers continue to be extraordinarily high, the design is ugly, there’s still no generous, sunny, central and inviting plaza, affordability is limited. This plan will have a major negative impact on people living in the area and the small businesses that give The Drive its beloved eclectic character. In the revised plan, the towers are actually higher, from ground to the very top, than before.
While they developers have removed a residential storey from each tower, the retail “plinth” is actually increased in height, and the new design has stacked enclosures on top of the roof so as to add significant height.
For example, tower “A” has increased in height by 25 feet from ground to the tip top. It now would rise to 371.7 feet, whereas previously it was 346 feet. That brings it to be the equivalent of 41 residential storeys.
